Food Technology

The Food Technology curriculum at Brownhill Special School focuses on teaching students’ essential skills related to food preparation, nutrition, kitchen safety, and healthy eating habits. It is often adapted to meet the diverse abilities and learning needs of the students, ensuring that they gain practical, real-life skills that contribute to their independence and well-being.

The intent of our Food Technology curriculum is to:

Equip students with practical cooking and food preparation skills, ensuring they can contribute to their own and others’ well-being by preparing healthy, nutritious meals.

Encourage students to make informed decisions about food choices, understanding the importance of a balanced diet and how different foods contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Support students in developing confidence and autonomy in the kitchen, enabling them to manage tasks such as planning, shopping, cooking, and cleaning up.

Through collaborative cooking activities, students will develop teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication, essential for working in shared environments.

Engage students with sensory impairments or other learning challenges through multi-sensory experiences, including touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound in cooking activities.

Connect learning from other areas such as numeracy (measuring ingredients),  literacy (reading recipes), science (understanding food properties), and health (nutrition), providing a holistic educational experience.

Instill essential knowledge about kitchen safety, food hygiene, and personal cleanliness to ensure that students are aware of the risks and can prevent accidents and foodborne illnesses.
